DESCRIPTION:
The maps tool lets you map your running, walking, cycling, and hiking routes. By drawing your route
on a standard or aerial photo map, you can see exactly how far you went in miles or kilometers.
Map routes anywhere, on or off-road without GPS.
MENUS, FIELDS & BUTTONS:
| Location |
Specifies the map location. First select a country from the menu, then enter a location in the box to the right. For the United States, you can enter a city, street address or zip code. For all other countries, enter a city or postal code. Press the Return key or click "Go" to display the map. Note: changing the location erases any unsaved routes, so you will be asked to confirm this first. |
| Go |
Displays a map of the location entered in the box to the left. |
| Map Type |
Specifies the type of map to display. There are five options which include, "Street", "Aerial", "Hybrid", "Dark", and "Light". "Street" displays a standard street map. "Aerial" displays an aerial photo view. "Hybrid" combines the two by drawing streets and labels on top of aerial photos. "Dark" and "Light" display street maps with dark and light color schemes. |
| Zoom |
Specifies the map zoom level. Levels range from 2 (farthest away) to 18 (closest in). By default, this is set to 15 each time a new location is displayed. Zoom in to draw routes more precisely, and zoom out to see more of the surrounding area. |
| New Route |
Erases the route currently on the map so you can start drawing a new one. Since this will erase any unsaved route, you will be asked to confirm this first. |
| Save Map... |
Saves the current map route. You will be prompted to select a folder, route name and an optional description. Routes are stored in the Course and Route Manager database. If a route with the same name already exists, you will be asked whether to replace it. In addition to the route itself, the map location, map type, zoom level, distance and distance units are all saved. Saved routes can also be selected on the journal's workout panels. |
| Center Map |
Re-centers the map on the location specified above. |
| Undo |
Removes the last route point added to the map. |
| Manage Routes... |
Opens the Course and Route Manager, where saved routes can be organized into folders, renamed and deleted. |
| Miles / KM |
Specifies the units used to measure route distance. Select "Miles" or "KM" (kilometers). The distance shown in the box to the right is converted automatically when the units are changed. |
| Distance |
Displays the total route distance, in the units selected on the menu to the left. This value updates automatically as route points are added, moved or removed. |
| Open Saved Map Route |
Loads a previously saved route. Select a route name from the menu to display it on the map. The map location, map type, zoom level, distance units and route are all restored. Since loading a route erases any unsaved routes, you will be asked to confirm this first. |
| Refresh |
Redraws the current map. Use this if portions of the map fail to load. |
| Drawing Routes |
To draw a route, click once on each major point along your path with the mouse. The points are connected automatically, and the total distance is updated as you go. For the most accurate distance, zoom in and add extra points along curves, so the connecting lines closely follow your actual path. |
| Moving Points |
To fine-tune a route, drag any point to a new location using the mouse. The route distance updates automatically while the point moves. To see the distance at any point along the route, along with its latitude and longitude, place the mouse pointer directly over the point without clicking. |
| Scrolling the Map |
To scroll, drag the map background in any direction with the mouse. The map can also be scrolled by moving the mouse pointer to any edge of the map and holding it still for about one second. The map will scroll automatically in that direction until the pointer is moved away. |
